The Defiant Requiem Foundation’s Summer Seminar for New and Advanced Teaching Ambassadors, a multi-day, in-person seminar for educators took place in in Washington, D.C., from Sunday, June 23 to Wednesday, June 26, 2024. The seminar provided a deep dive into The Defiant Requiem Foundation’s educational materials and presented a wide range of programming about cultural resistance during the Holocaust and today.

“America and Americans, Then and Now” with Dr. Daniel Greene and Dr. Daniel Mendelsohn
Keynote event featuring remarks by Dr. Mendelsohn, author of the critically acclaimed, award-winning book The Lost: A Search for Six of Six Million and by Dr. Greene who curated the USHMM exhibition Americans and the Holocaust at the USHMM.
“Contemporary Antisemitism and Holocaust Education” with Dr. Michael Berenbaum
Michael Berenbaum joined us by Zoom to discuss contemporary antisemitism and Holocaust education, focusing on the unique nature of anti-Jewish conspiracy and tropes, how these ideologies led to the Holocaust, and the ways that Holocaust instruction can be an effective tool in fighting bigotry and prejudice.
“Teaching As Resistance in the war in Ukraine” with Tetyana Ibrahimova and Ruslana Bernatska
Ukrainian teachers Tetyana Ibrahimova and Ruslana Bernatska spoke and shared images and videos about teaching as an act of resistance in the war with Russia.
“Death Strikes: The Emperor of Atlantis” with Dave Maass and Patrick Lay
Authors Dave Mass and Patrick Lay joined by Zoom to discuss their adaptation of Peter Kein and Victor Ullmann’s 1943 Terezín opera, Kaiser of Atlantis, into a graphic novel.
Inseparable: The Hess Twins’ Holocaust Journey through Bergen-Belsen to America with Marion Ein Lewin
Marion Ein Lewin spoke in conversation with DRF Executive Director Louisa Hollman about the story of her childhood and surviving the Holocaust with her twin brother.
